About

The woman behind, around, inside and beside whatshealthy

If you are anything like me –  i.e. 5 feet tall – you will really hate it when people ask you to stand up when you are already standing up because that is size-ist humour. And, as a vertically overlooked member of the homo-sapiens species, I take a stand practically and at times perspicaciously on this lowly kind of remark.

The question of who I am, and indeed who any of us are, is both an existential and critical one. It is not just a matter of name, social security number and marital status, an activity in which I recently indulged – i.e. got married for the first time again in 2011, it is in fact one of the biggest and most frequently asked questions, especially by those who like me, endure years of psychotherapy.

As I am beginning to understand who I am, I will introduce the parts of me that I know.

At the very core of me I am pure energy and love; but aren’t we all.

Otherwise I am a mother, journalist, author and entrepreneur. I write feature stories for newspapers and magazines and my special interests are in the international complementary health area as well as art, architecture, design and all the heaps of other stuff I have written about including what to buy for Mother’s Day, sustainable road design and the Oscars.

My fervent interest in health was sparked when I faced the possibility of a life threatening challenge at 35 years old. My gynecologist discovered two breast lumps. (And no, he didn’t mistake my small breasts for lumps. See, another comment on my dimensional lack.)

Anyone who has experienced such a thing knows about the terror you feel before you know the results. It turned out that the lumps were hyperplasic or active cells that had the potential to become cancer. They were immediately removed from my breast. After surgery, I was determined to heed the warning and went about exploring prevention.

My quest was to find the worlds’  best advances in complementary health and experience as much as I could first hand. I learnt a lot and came to the conclusion that balance is important. This does not just mean leading a balanced life, but embracing the best that medicine and complementary medicine has to offer. Sometimes there are things that need to be cut out or sewn up. And you wouldn’t go to a Reiki healer to set a broken bone.

In the course of my investigations I learnt that achieving a state of obscene health is not exactly what it might seem. In fact it goes way deeper than you think, which is illustrated in many of the stories on this site.

The person I have come to know better, Jeanette Leigh, had to be a brave soldier. I still find myself at the battle “front”, however these days I tend not to fight my demons, I make peace with them, accept them so that I can prevent them from taking hold and buggering things up.

Bookish

All this led to my first book, The Natural Health Directory (NHD), published by Hill of Content, 2001. NHD was and still is a boon for those searching for ways to enhance their healing experiences.

My second book, co-authored with natural therapist and radio personality Monica Jane Shalit, was called Deep Vein Thrombosis – The condition you don’t have to have, published by Pennon Publishing, 2002. It provided revolutionary ways to prevent deep vein thrombosis using natural remedies.

My previous book, Managing Aches and Pains, co authored with Osteopath, Dr Patrick Mudge, 2011, is available on Amazon. It’s a great resource for those who wish to prevent or overcome musculoskeletal complaints and stay healthy. Understanding more about how our body works, what it needs to be healthy, and what to do when things go wrong, gives us all a better chance of realizing our body’s potential and getting more out of life.

Defeat Insomnia, A complete natural healthcare guide to insomnia and other sleep disordersis my latest book. It was co-authored with natural therapist Monica Jane Shalit. Defeat Insomnia provides remedies and advice regarding the best therapies to seek; from naturopathy, Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, to flower essences, bath therapies and relaxation techniques. It’s a comprehensive must-have reference explaining why we develop sleep issues, the many conditions that comprise insomnia, the sleep cycle, and the plethora of vital restorative tasks that our body executes during slumber. There are even delicious sleep enhancing recipes. I wouldn’t say this too often but I hope this book puts you to sleep!

Otherwise…

I used to be in show business and I’m a public speaker, health event producer and  marketing and communications specialist.

As for the other bits, I live in Kauai, Hawaii, the mecca for those involved in spiritual and healing arts, plus some movie stars.

I grow my own vegetables however the sad thing is that I haven’t quite mastered the art of cooking them yet. Although my barley, brussel sprout and cabbage soup is legendary – with my chooks. Ah well.
